On June 26, Lonnie and I celebrated our SEVENTH wedding anniversary. Wow, how time flies! To celebrate, we took a MUCH needed break from the kids and headed for Kansas City for 3 full days and two nights away. My parents watched the kids during the day on Friday, but the Grubbs took over once they got off work that afternoon and kept them the rest of the weekend. I probably don't say it enough, but I LOOOOOOVE having my sister here, and I don't worry a single bit when she's caring for the boys. And now that my parents are here, too, I've got more people to love on our boys!
Anyway, back to AWAY from the kids. We stayed at a hotel close to the Plaza, so Friday during the day we enjoyed walking around, going in shops, eating lunch, and just enjoying each other's company without being interrupted. We found a little cupcake shop and ate a fancy French Toast cupcake at a cute little table outside.
Dinner was something we were REALLY looking forward to. We had reservations at The Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant. If you're not familiar, you get a 4 course meal that you basically cook and eat at your table. You start with cheese that you get to dip bread and veggies in. Next they bring you a salad. For the entree, you get a plate of raw meat and you just cook it in your pot for a minute and a half each. DELICIOUS!!!!!! For dessert they bring you chocolate that you can dip cheesecake, strawberries, bananas, brownies, rice krispie treats, etc. I was too stuffed at that point and didn't even do the chocolate, I just ate the stuff plain! The atmosphere was awesome, and it was just a wonderful experience. It's super expensive, so it's probably not something we'll do again, but was perfect for our weekend away!
Saturday we had planned on going to Schlitterbahn (a waterpark), but woke up to dark and dreary skies, followed by rain. Boo. But no problem. We just piddled around throughout the day, doing whatever we wanted just because we could! We had breakfast at IHOP, went shopping at a mall, went to a casino, and laid out at the pool (by the afternoon it had cleared up).
For dinner that night we had found a Brazilian steakhouse at the Plaza and were excited to try that out. It was delicious, of course! We ate a lot of meat!
Sunday was sunny and clear, so we headed to Schlitterbahn. It was a blast! The coolest part was that the lazy river and wave pool were combined, so every 15 seconds you had a big wave that sent you down the lazy river - awesome! After several hours we headed back home to pick up the boys. It was loads of fun, but we missed them, too!
I'm shocked if anyone is still reading...I know no one really cares about our weekend away, but it was one of the best weekends I've ever had, so I had to document it! :)
Of course, I hardly got any pictures, but here we are at The Melting Pot.

Those of us who don't get to talk to you in person LOVE to read about your special celebrations, as well as your day-to-day family adventures.
BTW, I am so jealous of your parents moving close to you....I'm not kidding, I have to pray for forgiveness every time I see how much time they get with the kids and grandkids!
Bill only has 4 years and 6 months from today (I think) until he can retire and be "vested". Don't tell anyone tho...not sure Bill knows exactly how precisely I'm counting down the days :)
Awwwww! Thanks, Laura! I'm assuming you'll be back up here when Bill retires? We miss you!
Well I was VERY interested in hearing about your get away!! So happy you two had a wonderful time! The Melting Pot looks amazing, Carl and I should try it! Our 6 year anniversary is coming up soon so maybe we can steal your idea! :) SO happy you had a little break that focused on just you both. I believe getting away now and then will make you a better parent too!! Happy 7 year!

JOYFUL ANTICIPATION
If I could have my way, Christmas would be celebrated on Sunday every year! This year was PERFECT!
We had given the kids plenty of warning that Santa would come after church.
We talked about how it would be such a great way for us to show the Lord that He comes first. The kids were all over it!
(They are better than I was! I would be freaking out, I am sure! :) )
When they woke up Santa had left a little gift for both of them.
It was the only thing they could open before church. They both got new Sunday clothes to wear.
They got dressed and ready without even a single peep about getting to see their presents.
Sacrament Meeting was a beautiful choir program and centered around Christ. Perfect!
When we got home, we all got back into our PJs and then we let the kids come through the barrier of blankets I had put up to help them keep their focus. This year Mal was SO much fun! Super excited about every single present! Pretty funny!
This year was the tester year for Jake. The magic, after 11 years of believing, was in question. I let him come to his own conclusion. When he opened a big barrel of licorice he was CONVINCED Santa had brought it. He said, "There is NO WAY you would have gotten that for me!" He believed! And then about a week later, he had to know and asked me out right.
I told him. It rocked his world a bit. Then he spent the next few days asking where I got things, trying to wrap his brain around it all. He doesn't feel sad or let down, just a big change from what he thought and excited to help us keep it up for Mal until she is done with that part of her life too.
Anyway, a lot of family asked me to record this...and so I did! Mallory's reactions KILL ME! She is was SUPER stoked! The reactions over the $1 notebook, apple and the gum totally cracks me up! Enjoy! :)
Yes, she has asked OVER AND OVER AND OVER for a couple of years for a DS. This year, she finally got one.
We finally gave in because she is awesome about limits. If I tell her she has 20 min. a day, she will ask every 5 minutes if her time is up yet.
When it is, she shuts it off and walks away. However, if I am not good about watching the time.....well,
she will play the thing all day. NOT GOOD! We have to keep on top of that, or we pay with a grumpy Mally!
